I Designed My Dream Couch at NFM—and Here’s What the Process Was Really Like

When I first started looking for a new couch, I felt totally overwhelmed. I knew I wanted something cozy, timeless, and built to last—without spending a small fortune. But where do you even start? I turned to Instagram for recommendations, and one name came up over and over again: NFM. So I decided to check it out for myself… and I’m so glad I did.

What I found wasn’t just a showroom full of options—it was a full-on custom couch experience.  And honestly? It was pretty magical.

From “I Have No Idea” to “That’s the One”

When I walked into NFM, I had a general vision—but zero clue how to bring it to life. Luckily, the team there made it so easy. I worked with Josh McNelly who was absolutely phenomenal! He was so patient with me and offered great advice throughout the entire process. We looked at every couch in that showroom, but I knew the custom route was going to work best for me. The Jonathan Louis Design Lab has this hands-on setup where you can mix and match styles, fabrics, cushion types, and layouts. I sat down with Josh who helped me figure out exactly what I wanted without ever feeling overwhelmed or pressured.

It’s Actually Custom

This wasn’t a “choose from three colors” situation. I got to pick everything—arm style, depth, cushion firmness, fabric (which is pet-friendly, by the way), even the leg shape. I knew I wanted a large sectional with a chaise that both worked for our space currently and in the future. We were able to build that out piece by piece and create something that I loved!

One of the coolest parts? Sitting and testing the couches in the showroom rather than just placing an order online and hoping for the best. I literally plopped down on every single option until I found the perfect feel. You don’t realize how much things like depth, height, and support matter until you’re physically trying them out. With an eight-inch height difference between my husband and me, finding the right cushion depth for both of us had to be done in person!

The Final Result? I’m Obsessed

About six weeks later, my custom couch was delivered and it was everything I’d hoped for. The quality is incredible, the comfort is next level, and the style fits our home perfectly. It feels elevated but still super cozy, making it perfect for afternoon naps or family movie nights. And because I was so involved in the design process, I love it even more!

Why I’d Recommend It to Anyone

Here’s what made the experience stand out:

  • Completely customizable – Every single detail was up to me. I even got to select the fabric for the accent pillows!

  • Helpful design support – I never felt rushed or confused

  • Pet-friendly options – Because my dogs are on the couch more than I am

  • Easy delivery – The setup was quick and stress-free

If you’ve been searching for the “right” couch and nothing feels just right, I can’t recommend this experience enough. The Jonathan Louis Design Lab at NFM turned what felt like an impossible decision into something I actually enjoyed—and now I get to lounge on my dream couch every day!
