Our History

December 3, 1893
In the Beginning…
Rose Gorelick (Mrs. B) is born in Shirdeen, Russia, outside of Minsk.

1917
Coming to America
Rose immigrates with her husband Isadore Blumkin to America.

1937
Humble Beginnings
Rose Blumkin begins Nebraska Furniture Mart in the basement of her husbands downtown shop.

1950
New Downtown Locations
Electronics and appliances are added to the store. NFMs growing success leads to moves to various downtown locations and 2205 Farnam becomes the flagship store.

1970
Western Expansion
A new Omaha retail location is added on South 72nd St., supplementing the 22nd and Farnam downtown store.

1975
Unexpected Opportunity
A devastating F4 tornado totals the new store on 72nd St. Mrs. B and Louie B. simply rebuild the store on the same spot, bigger and better.

1980
Consolidation
The 72nd St. store becomes the sole Omaha location.

1983
Simply a Handshake
A simple handshake between legendary investor Warren Buffett and Rose Blumkin seals a $60 million deal that adds NFM to the Berkshire Hathaway fold.

1994
Mega‑Expansion
A new building, the “Mega‑Mart”, is added to house Electronics & Appliances, which become their own divisions. Modernization updates also occur to the store and the rest of the 77‑acre campus.

1997
Hard Work
Mrs. B. works at NFM until she’s 103.

1998
A New Frontier
NFM launches their first E‑commerce website.

2001
An Acquisition
Remodel of Omaha store. NFM’s Iowa store moves to Clive, a Des Moines suburb, now selling flooring, appliances, and Sony electronics. NFM purchases Homemakers, a furniture store based in Des Moines, Iowa.

2002
New Warehouse
A state‑of‑the‑art warehouse and distribution center opens on Omaha’s campus and also includes a totally updated Mrs. B.’s Clearance Center and Factory Outlet store.

2003
KC Store Opens
A third store is opened in Kansas City, Kansas with more than 1,000,000 square feet of retail and distribution space.

2006
Warehouse & Website
A warehouse and distribution center, similar to the one in Omaha, is added to the Kansas City store. NFM also launches a new website.

2007
Major Renovation
Major renovation to the Appliance and Electronics store in Omaha.

2010
Renovation Continues
Major renovation to the KC & Omaha stores.

2011
New Website
Redesign of NFM.com—A world class online shopping experience and top 500 internet retailer site.

2012
Groundbreaking at New Texas Store
NFM breaks ground for a new store in The Colony, Texas to open in spring 2015.

2013
Work Continues on New Texas Store
Construction continues on the new NFM store in The Colony, Texas.

2015
Grand Opening of Dallas‑Fort Worth Store
On May 7, 2015, Nebraska Furniture Mart opens America's largest home furnishings store.
